Kemp Little: Strategic tech investment led to double-digit growth

About Kemp Little

Kemp Little is a leading technology and digital media law firm. The firm was established 20 years ago and, despite evolving and growing to over 90 staff, it remains true to its tech roots and helping large and small businesses navigate the complex issues surrounding technology adoption. As new technologies evolve and become omnipresent within commercial businesses, Kemp Little has kept pace and introduced practice areas to address the legal aspects that come with these new developments. The firm advises businesses such as FTSE 100 and large multinational firms with their technology and digital media needs.

Kemp Little’s perseverance with the Lawyer Awards

Kemp Little submitted nominations for the awards twice before winning the 2017 Boutique Law Firm of the Year category. As a specialist law firm, it believed that the boutique category reflected the firm’s strengths and was not disheartened in the years it did not win. Kemp Little took on board the lessons to be learned from looking at those firms who had won the award in previous years and kept on its strategic path coupled with a focus on investing further in its people, technology and facilities.

The perseverance paid off. In 2017 The Lawyer’s judging panel recognised Kemp Little’s strong strategy of investment in delivering tech innovation and a second year of double-digit growth and selected the company as the winner of Boutique Law Firm of the Year category.

Why did they win?

Keeping up with its clients’ technology issues is only part of Kemp Little’s story. The firm felt that its internal operations should adapt to use the latest technology in order to make its own practices stronger. Clients are changing how they buy legal services, have new ways to access legal information and are demanding greater value from the firms they employ. The judges praised the firm for constantly evolving and addressing challenges head on through investment in transformational areas such as big data, robotics, biometrics and artificial intelligence, and the deployment of in-house and third-party tech solutions.

Kemp Little was chosen as the winner thanks to the hard work of the leadership team, partners and associates and the strategic technology investment that led double-digit growth in the previous 12 months.

The boost of winning The Lawyer award for Boutique Law Firm of the Year

Andrew Joint, Managing Partner & Commercial Technology Partner, says that ‘the award win gave a big morale boost with Kemp Little staff’. The Lawyer Awards are an eminent industry award and so, not only did the win give a boost to the firm’s legal and support staff who worked hard in the previous year, but it was great for the firm’s external profile. The day after the awards ceremony Andrew’s LinkedIn post about the win saw more than 6,000 views and Kemp Little’s website and LinkedIn page saw significantly increased traffic. Clients were also impressed by this important industry recognition.

Advice to those thinking of applying for the 2018 awards from Kemp Little’s Andrew Joint

“We definitely recommend other firms enter – it did wonders for staff morale, our social media recognition rocketed and clients were really impressed. Top tip, though…don’t think that the term boutique can only mean small. We felt that our definition of boutique translated as specialists in technology.  When making our application we were able to show to the judges our value in growing and evolving in a niche market.”
