Cuatrecasas has enlisted the help of best friend Herbert Smith to develop its China strategy, sending a senior associate to the UK firm’s Shanghai office.
Corporate associate Omar Puertas flew into Shanghai from Madrid last week to report on how Herbert Smith manages its China operations.
Cuatrecasas Madrid managing partner Julián García Rubí said: “It’s more than a secondment. What we’d like is to get permission to practise as legal consultants in Shanghai.”
He added: “We asked for some help from Herbert Smith on this. China for us is very new, but the British firms have a long practice there and in Hong Kong.”
The Spanish firm also intends to use its best friends to step up its Latin American presence.
Cuatrecasas is allied with Creel García-Cuéllar y Müggenburg in Mexico and is considering sending a corporate partner with their team to the firm’s Mexico City office.
Rubí said: “Mexico’s a booming market and justifies having a partner there. This is still under discussion however.”
Cuatrecasas already has a partner placed with Brazilian firm Machado Meyer Sendacz e Opice.
