The US firm announced the appointment following the decision by current London head Phil Feder to return to his hometown of Los Angeles.

O’Sullivan told The Lawyer: “I’m excited at the prospect of leading the London office. The continued growth of our practice and platform in London is a pivotal piece of our global strategy and I’m looking forward to spearheading the efforts, in particular as we actively build our corporate offering.”

O’Sullivan joined Paul Hastings from Herbert Smith six years ago and became a partner in 2006. His new appointment is effective immediately.

Feder has been London head for almost three years and will relocate to Paul Hastings’ California office in July. He will use the interim few months as a transition period alongside O’Sullivan, and will continue as global chairman of the firm’s real estate practice.

The firm’s London office recently hired Morrison & Foerster counsel Suzanne Horne as head of UK employment, and is rebuilding following the defection of its City employment team to Covington & Burling last year.

Feder’s departure from London comes at the end of a turbulent period, with a number of partner exits (The Lawyer, 14 February 2011).
