The firm has brought Chilean firm Carey y Cía Abogados and Mexican firm Creel García-Cuellar y Müggenburg into a Latin American desk that it is running with its Iberian alliance members, and is now considering bringing them into the alliance proper.
Cuatrecasas' formal Iberian alliance, known as CGMP, involves Portuguese firm Gonçalves Pereira Castelo Branco & Associados, Argentinian firm Pérez Alati Grondona Benites Arntsen & Martínez de Hoz and Brazilian firm Machado Meyer Sendacz e Opice Advogados.
Both the Mexican and the Chilean firm have been invited onto the newly-created Latin American desk, which is based in Madrid and made up of secondees, to enhance their relationships with CGMP.
“The idea is to cover more jurisdictions from Spain; and we thought a good way to see if we should go into a formal relationship with the Mexican and Chilean firm was to have some of their people seconded here,” said Cuatrecasas corporate partner José Maria Balañá, who is running the Latin American desk.
