Canada-based Torys is taking on a chief operating officer to free up its managing partner to concentrate on client consultation.
Alan Pearson is joining from the Deloitte & Touche partnership in Toronto in a role aimed at broadening the management structure to increase coordination between the New York and Toronto offices.
A year ago the firm pulled off the first US-Canada merger when Toronto firm Tory Tory DesLauriers & Binnington and New York firm Haythe & Curley merged. Now the 300-lawyer firm wants to build on that to increase its cross-border transactional practice.
Pearson says: “I’ll be focusing on the internal operations and freeing up the managing partner and lawyers to focus on clients.”
His new position will include responsibility for the firm-wide HR department, administration, IT, finance and accounting.
