In brief: Extradition hopes improve for Leeson

Extradition to the UK of Nick Leeson, the dealer blamed with bringing down Barings bank, could follow an action launched by the Barings Perpetual Noteholders' Action Group, whose members lost £100 million in the bank's collapse. The City of London Magistrates' Court issued eight summonses on behalf of the group requiring Leeson to appear on 30 October to answer charges. The alleged offences are within the jurisdiction of the Central Criminal Court. The action group said there was a “substantial public interest” in Leeson being tried in this jurisdiction. The summonses were sent to the Home Secretary, for them to be served on Leeson in Germany. SJ Berwin is advising the action group.
