Tesco to review legal advisers

Tesco is reviewing its legal advisers in a bid to cut costs, with head of legal Martin Field inviting current advisers and others that the supermarket has not used before to pitch.

Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) has historically been Tesco’s leading external adviser for corporate and real estate. Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer also has a close relationship, mainly on corporate.

The BLP relationship may have been affected by the ongoing claim from the supermarket for almost £1m in damages over the firm’s handling of a real estate transaction.

A BLP spokesperson said the firm’s relationship with the supermarket giant remains strong and that it continues to work for Tesco. Responses to invitations to tender were due last Friday, 10 September.
