Shearman & Sterling is muscling in on Premier League football transfer work after one of the firm’s associates joined Manchester City as general counsel.

Simon Cliff, who last year worked on the club’s £200m takeover by Shearman client Abu Dhabi United Group while an associate at the firm, made the switch earlier this month. He is the first general counsel at the North-West club, which is now owned by Sheikh Mansour.

Laurence Levy, the Shearman partner who led the takeover deal and seconded Cliff to the club in December 2008, said of football transfers: “The money is so big these days, they’re major M&A transactions in their own right. The ongoing legal needs of Premier League clubs are
very significant.”
