Scuffle of the week

The Government v The Guardian and The Observer. The newspapers’ lawyers accused the Government of using oppressive tactics to prevent them reporting allegations of abuse of power by MI6. The papers are challenging a March ruling by Judge Martin Stephens which ordered them to give police any emails or notes they may have relating to former MI5 staffer David Shayler. Prosecution lawyers are maintaining that newspapers and former security service officers must be stopped from disclosing information about British intelligence, even if it reveals involvement in a plot to assassinate the head of a foreign government.
