Racism claim against barristers dropped

Allegations of inciting racial hatred, bigotry and making anti-Islamic statements against two senior family barristers lodged in a claim to a Tehran court have been withdrawn.

Martin Pointer QC and Nicholas Cusworth, both of 1 Mitre Court Buildings, accepted the seriousness, although not the validity, of the claims and did not instruct defence lawyers.

The allegations are understood to relate to a statement by the counsel presented during a without prejudice hearing at London's High Court. According to one source the statement said that the assets of the defendant, who was disputing his wife's claim to a portion of them, were, in part, in the hands of “shady characters in the Middle East”.

The claim was filed by two friends of the defendant.
