Linklaters boosts trademark filings as UK figures fall

Despite slashing numbers in its IP practice in 2002, Linklaters' UK trademark filing has increased by almost 55 per cent.

The latest figures from the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys reveal an overall decline in the number of trademarks filed in the UK. But Linklaters and Pinsent Curtis Biddle have bucked the trend, increasing their filings by almost 55 per cent.

“We have continued to put resources into patent litigation and brand protection and enforcement. Trademark filing is at the heart of what we do and it's a good way of cementing our relationships with clients,” said Linklaters IP partner Anna Carboni.

Carboni acknowledged that the boost was down to three particularly active clients: Scottish & Newcastle, De Beers and Granada Media. The firm won Granada Media at the end of 2001 and as sole agent it has benefited from the branding phenomenon of Popstars and Popstars: The Rivals.

Of those whose figures have dropped, Clifford Chance and Field Fisher Waterhouse claim their clients are focusing on European community trademarks.

Paradoxically, Pinsents claimed the table reflected the firm's strength in the domestic market. “We have won a few major clients, such as RAC and MG Rover, that have boosted our figures,” said partner Lindsey Wrenn, head of the firm's trademark unit.

Trademark agents still dominate the list, aided by firms such as DLA, which hived off its trademark filing practice to agent Urquhart Dykes & Lord at the end of 2002.
