Barclays has hired Herbert Smith corporate partner Michael Shaw as its deputy general counsel.
Shaw replaces former deputy general counsel Judith Shepherd, who became general counsel of Barclays Global Retail and Commercial Bank last year.
Barclays general counsel Mark Harding said of Shaw’s appointment: “In-house is a very different role from private practice. We were really looking for someone who has good deal experience and general advisory experience.
“Michael’s strong corporate background means he’ll be working on any corporate related deals.”
While at Herbert Smith Shaw had close ties with energy group EDF. In 2008 The Lawyer reported that Shaw and Herbert Smith energy partner Mark Newbery led a team advising EDF on its £12.5bn acquisition of a nuclear power generator from British Energy (24 September 2008).
Shaw was also seconded to the Takeover Panel for two years during the 1990s.
