Addleshaws study discovers employment issues are rife

A survey of large companies carried out by Addleshaw Goddard has revealed that more than half had faced a major employment issue within the past three years.

The firm commissioned the survey to examine how companies deal with employment claims. In total, 79 organisations were interviewed to find out what their principal employment issues were and who handled them within the company.

More than a fifth of those surveyed had suffered three major employment issues during the past three years. The appointment of non-board senior executives, business restructurings and discrimination claims were the most common issues facing companies.

The survey discovered that HR departments and management boards were more likely to deal with employment problems than in-house legal departments, despite the fact that 39 per cent of respondents had an in-house legal function equipped to deal with employment.

Organisations used external advisers for employment issues in 28 per cent of cases, mainly discrimination and tribunal claims. In-house legal departments are usually called in for industrial action or tribunal claims.

More than half (52 per cent) of respondents said they were very satisfied with the quality of external advice given.
