White & Case hires Euro IP team

US firm White & Case has poached top IP lawyer David Llewelyn and keymembers of his team

to set up its London IP practice.Llewelyn joins from Llewelyn Zietman, which he founded

with Clive Zietmanfive years ago.He will effectively be head of IP for the whole of

White & Case's Europeannetwork, working with the telecoms, competition and international

M&Apractices. The lawyers going with him have not been announced but areunderstood to

include big hitters.Llewelyn says Llewelyn Zietman has grown from five lawyers to 30 and

“isno longer the same firm” he set up in 1994.Ian MacDonald, a partner at Llewelyn

Zietman, says the firm will probablychange its name. “That's something we will have to

discuss with David, butI anticipate that it will change,” he says.Llewelyn's move also

calls into question Llewelyn Zietman's referralrelationship with Boodle Hatfield. Before

setting up his own firm, Llewelyn was a partner at McKenna & Co,where he met John

Bellhouse, White & Case's executive partner in London. The idea of Llewelyn joining

Bellhouse's firm came up when the pair haddinner, Llewelyn says.
