Manchester practice Halliwell Landau is poised to open a London office following the trend established by its main regional rivals, Addleshaw Booth & Co, Hammond Suddards and Dibb Lupton Alsop.
It is believed the move will be finalised by the end of this week. It will have the capacity for expansion, but will initially be run by two experienced partners from the corporate department.
In addition, it is believed there will be two consultants and about 10 fee earners.
Senior partner of Halliwells, Roger Lancaster, was unavailable for comment.
Managing partner at Addleshaw Booth & Co, Mark Jones, whose London office opened in November, says its move was prompted by the needs of existing clients.
Currently its presence is limited to one partner and three full-time assistants (who rejoined the firm when the London office opened), plus a number of support staff.
