Trainees' minimum salary set to rise

At Thursday's council meeting, members will consider a recommendation that from August 1 2000, the minimum wage for central London be raised from £12,150 to £13,600, with a Council recommended salary of £14,600.

The Training Contract Review Group also recommends that the minimum level should be increased from £10,850 to £12,000 with a Council recommended salary of £13,000.

Waivers from the minimum salary should be granted to law firms only in "exceptional circumstances" says the group.

The group also calls for the minimum salary and recommended salary levels to be reviewed every two years of increased every year to take into account increases in the Retail Prices Index
