What was your first-ever job?
I worked in a record shop in Edinburgh.

What was your worst experience as a trainee?
Spending the day with bailiffs in a very disadvantaged part of Glasgow – a truly terrifying experience.

Where’s the best place to go if you want to find out what’s really going on in the office?
The coffee machine.

What time do you usually leave the office?
After it gets dark.

What do you do at weekends?
Whenever I can I sail with my family on the south coast.

What’s your favourite restaurant?
My local Italian, which has excellent food and a relaxed attitude to children.

If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you have been?
A garden designer.

Who was your mentor or role model?
I have a great respect for current Field Fisher Waterhouse managing partner Colin McArthur.

What’s the best thing about your job?
Working with talented people I like.

What’s the toughest thing about your job?
Having to say no.

What’s your biggest work/career mistake and what did you learn from it?
Giving honest upward appraisal to a partner in a previous firm – it taught me to exercise caution when giving personal opinions.

What car(s) do you drive?
I don’t drive.

What book are you currently reading?
Open Secret by Stella Rimington.

What’s on your CD player at the moment?
John Lee Hooker’s The Healer.

What’s your favourite children’s book?
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.
