SJ Ber-winning

Happy times at SJ Berwin.

The old problem of the supposed silo culture finally looks like being fixed after the firm rewrote the partnership deed to encourage cross selling; the private equity practice is winning high-profile ABS instructions; and the contested management election is back.

Today’s news is mixed for the firm: it has decided not to appoint a replacement for its Asia managing partner Daniel Liew, who quit for SNR Denton last year. Its Asian practice, after all, has shrunk to just a pair of partners plus a senior lawyer from an associated firm.

The upside: SJ Berwin suddenly feels confident that it can dangle the role as a carrot to entice a senior hire in the region, where SJ Berwin is a relative newcomer. But with Singapore only a far-off target on the agenda as a funds and disputes mine, the silver circle firm has got a lot of ground to catch up.
