Simmons’ promotions reveal international ambitions

Simmons & Simmons has chosen the first day of the new financial year to promote 13 to its partnership, slightly down on last year’s figure.

The partnerships continued last year’s theme of internationalism, with London only taking three of the 13 new partners. Milan did exceptionally well, with another four, three of whom were finance lawyers.

Senior partner David Dickinson said: “The promotions illustrate the international strength of the firm, as well as the depth of quality within our practice teams.”

Unsurprisingly, the financial markets team netted the lion’s share of promotions, with seven firmwide, one more than last year. In 2006, the firm made up 15 partners in total.

Despite Hong Kong and China being particularly hard hit in 2006, just one partner was made up there. The only other non-European promotion was seen in Abu Dhabi.

Women did not do well out of this round of promotions, with just one in Frankfurt being made up.

Simmons operates a non-equity tier as well as introducing this year the role of counsel across the whole firm (see The Lawyer, 12 March). The firm declined to comment as to the split of non-equity to equity for the new partners.
