Missing the missus

Another bigwig giving a keynote speech recently was Lord Falconer, who took the occasion of the Bar Conference – held on a Saturday – to renew a few old acquaintances.

This is how he started: “It is a great honour to be invited here to speak. It is a great pleasure to see old friends, in particular my wife Marianna, who I see so seldom these days. Being a delegate here today allows her to get both CPD points and an opportunity for me to glimpse her across a crowded room and for her to see how I’m looking these days.”

Tulkinghorn is happy to know that love still exists in law, although, as one colleague pointed out, the esteemed Lord Falconer is “looking podgy and stressed and like a politician, mainly”.
