London brawling

Canada’s largest firm McCarthy Tétrault has faced many obstacles trying to establish itself in the UK with a small three-partner office. But there is one hurdle no other Canadian firm in the City has had to deal with before – the confusion between London, Ontario and London, England.

London, England managing partner Rob Bryant recently lamented to one of Tulkinghorn’s hacks that the UK base lost out on recognition and possible future work after a client got lost navigating the firm’s website and ended up in discussions with the Ontario office.
For the record, the Ontario version of London has a 14-partner McCarthy Tétrault office, is home to around 350,000 Canadians living not too far south of Toronto, and is not hosting the 2012 Olympics. It does, however, have a Thames Valley conservation area and a Covent Garden market. Confused?
