Shoosmiths has launched a family law practice in London after hiring two partners from Howard Kennedy.

Partners Juliette Peters and Jay Patel both specialise in high-net-worth work and have over 45 years of experience of matrimonial law between them.

Peters was previously head of family law at Howard Kennedy after holding the same position at boutique London firm Quastel Midgen. She advises clients on private children work, pre-nuptial agreements, divorce cases, civil partnership dissolutions and property claims.

Patel is experienced in providing advice on financial remedy claims, public and private children work, divorce lawsuits, and international matters such as child abduction. He also sits on the Law Society family law panel.

The hires are part of the firm’s plans to expand its national family law practice and grow its existing client base. Hobden added that the firm’s plans also involved a “strategic reinforcement” of its family law team in Nottingham.

Shoosmiths recently made up five lawyers to its partnership in a majority-female round. Female lawyers accounted for four of the five new partners, which is 80 per cent of the round.

The firm’s real estate practice gained three new partners while employment and regulatory each gained one each.
