SJ Berwin announces investigations offering

SJ Berwin has launched a corporate investigations group to assist corporate and financial services clients on multijurisdictional investigations.

The team features nine partners from across its competition, litigation and financial services practices. It will offer advice on fraud investigations, cartels, bribery and corruption and financial services litigation.

The group includes litigation partners Hilton Mervis and Tim Beale in its fraud section and competition partners Tom Usher, Lesley Farrell and Philipp Girardet looking after cartel work. Litigation partners Shaistah Akhtar and Nicola Bridge have been assigned to bribery and corruption, with financial services litigation partners Craig Pollack and Rachel Couter also involved.

Girardet said the move was about encouraging the cross-selling of existing services by the firm.

He commented: “The idea is that we’ve started to sit down more formally together as a group and share best practice. When you need to act quickly [for a client] it’s important to be able to draw on a big team.”

The move comes amid an increasing blurring of lines in the regulatory investigations space. Last week Chancellor George Osborne announced that the FSA would be dissolved, creating the prospect of a single financial regulatory body in the UK, also incorporating aspects of work previously carried out by the OFT.
