Hausfeld has reached a settlement with three individuals who sought to strike out the UK portion of a settlement reached in the US courts.
In February 2008 Hausfeld’s legacy firm, Cohen Milstein Hausfeld & Co, reached a settlement in a US price-fixing class action brought against British Airways and Virgin Atlantic (TheLawyer.com, 15 February 2008).
The £100m settlement gave eight million customers the right to claim compensation. Of that £100m, £73.5m was allocated for paying claims brought by those
who bought tickets for a transatlantic flight in sterling.
The three individuals challenged the ruling on the basis that the US courts should not have taken jurisdiction over UK claims. If successful it would have prevented UK citizens from gaining compensation from the US court.
Hausfeld worked with San Francisco firm Cotchett Pitre & McCarthy to reach the settlement.
