Feathers have been more than ruffled at the Bar Council since a former chairman decided to rejoin the membership, it appears.
Tulkinghorn has learnt that Matthias Kelly QC has become the first-ever ex-chairman to return to the fold. Kelly’s unprecedented move has raised more than one eyebrow.
Apparently there’s an unspoken rule that, once a chair, you can never rejoin the ranks. One Bar Council source said: “As a new committee you don’t want to have someone from a previous regime sticking their nose in. It’s like poor old John Major always being overshadowed by Maggie Thatcher.” Quite. It’s just not done. Whatever was Kelly thinking etc etc.
