Howrey launches Scandinavian practice with DG Comp hire

Howrey has boosted its Brussels antitrust practice with the hire of the head of the energy and environment unit at the European Commission’s Directorate General for Competition (DG Comp).

Lars Kjølbye joins the firm as a partner in April. He will launch a Scandinavian antitrust practice, drawing together a team of Scandinavian specialists from Howrey’s existing antitrust group in Europe.

Trevor Soames, European head of Howrey’s antitrust practice said: “We are very excited about this development and feel that now is the right time to launch this initiative.”

Kjølbye spent more than 10 years at DG Comp, working on cases in sectors such as aviation, banking and the music industry. Kjølbye will be reunited with former DG Comp colleagues Götz Drauz and Julian Joshua at Howrey.

Drauz said, “Our clients appreciate the fact that we are extremely conversant with both Commission policy and policy makers.”

The hire comes as Howrey restructures its London office to launch an offensive on the UK antitrust and IP markets. Since September the office has seen five partners leave and five new partners arrive.
