Book of the week

Controlled drugs – a handbook for the legal profession, by the Institute for the Study of Drug Dependence.

Everything you wanted to know about drugs but were afraid to ask. For instance, did you know that Crack Cocaine is also known as "rock", "base", or "wash" and hails from the eastern slopes of the Andes.

Cannabis, on the other hand, grows almost anywhere – even in gardens in the south of England. When smoked, it brings about "a feeling of euphoria and self confidence, accompanied by relaxation and possibly sleepiness". Not only that, "used socially, a group of users may become talkative and find hilarity in their conversation and situation".

Essential reading? Yes.

But would you want you teenage children to get hold of it? Perhaps not.
