Blackadders victim of 'ruthless' email hoax

Dundee-based Blackadders has called in Tayside Police to investigate a hoax email circulated by someone posing to be Gregor Murray, the firm's head of insolvency.

The email, which is thought to have been sent to people with BT internet addresses, read: “If you want to raise a Civil Court action against someone anywhere in Scotland then I am your man. I am a ruthless bastard and I will screw the opposition to the wall even if it means bending the rules.”

Partner Scott Williams, who is responsible for Blackadders' IT systems, said that he has responded to at least 145 people who have replied to the email.

“The replies have ranged from people who have written just a couple of words, to humorous replies from people wanting to do business in a less than reputable way. And some from people who are upset by the email,” he said.

As yet, there is no information to indicate the origin of the sender. But Williams suspects it is “possibly someone who thinks a service for one of Blackadders' clients has done them a disservice.”

The Law Society of Scotland has also been contacted by several people who have received the email. A spokesperson said: “It is unfortunate a solicitor has been involved through no fault of his own.”
