Appeal court returns artefacts to Iran

Withers has scored a Court of Appeal victory allowing Iran possession of 18 ancient artefacts taken from the country’s tombs.

Lord Chief Justice, Lord Phillips held that Iran could show it had obtained title to the treasures and so could enforce ownership of the objects.

Sir Sydney Kentridge QC of Brick Court Chambers acted for the Iranian government, instructed by partner Jeremy Scott from Withers.

Litigation partners Ludovic de Walden and Sophie Eyre from Lane & Partners instructed Philip Shepherd QC of XXIV Old Buildings for the Barakat Gallery.
