Weil prioritises London and finance in 12-strong promotions round

Weil Gotshal & Manges has added 12 new partners to its ranks in its most recent promotions round, up on nine the previous year, adding four partners in London.

The firm has prioritised London in this year’s promotions round after making only two promotions in the capital last year, and has been building back its finance team in the wake of high-profile exits.

Last year Weil added nine partners including four women and two new London partners focused on litigation and restructuring. This year all four City promotions are focused on finance and funds. They include former Clifford Chance funds star associate Stephen Fox, who quit the firm in 2011 to join Weil (4 July 2011) as well as US-qualified banking and finance lawyer Patrick Bright and banking lawyer Tom Richards. Structured finance and derivatives lawyer Brian Maher has also been made up in London.

The promotions, which take effect in January 2015, include six finance partners in total, divided between two banking and finance partners, two funds partners and two structured finance and derivatives partners.

The finance promotions follow the exit of high yield star Gil Strauss, who left the firm in August and Stephen Lucas, who exited for Kirkland & Ellis in May (20 May 2014). Lucas had strong links with Goldman Sachs and Citigroup after joining from Linklaters in 2011. Strauss left just months later for Simpson Thacher & Bartlett (21 August 2014).

US rival White & Case has so far been the most enthusiastic about London partners in its promotions rounds, having made up five new partners in London last month, more than any of the firm’s other offices globally (13 October 2014).

In contrast, Ropes & Gray added four new partners in London out of 20 in 2014 and Latham & Watkins made up just one partner in London out of 18 partners worldwide (30 October 2014).

However the London promotions at Ropes mark a sea-change after the firm failed to bring any new partners into London in 2013 among a 12-strong promotions round. This year’s addition of a private equity partner, finance partner and two government enforcement partners (4 November 2014).
