Jane Phillips

5RB

Jane Phillips’ new role as the joint head of 5RB should not be understated. Not only is the specialist media chambers now led by two women, but by one silk and one junior barrister – a rarity for the commercial Bar.

The unusual combination demonstrates 5RB’s approach to running a modern chambers, which is dynamic, collaborative and equal. Called to the Bar in 1989, Phillips hopes that her new position will inspire other senior junior barristers to take on leadership positions traditionally reserved for King’s Counsel.

Phillips, who replaced Justin Rushbrooke KC last October, will be working with joint head Adrienne Page KC to steer 5RB and bring together its barristers, clerks and business support staff. Beyond chambers management, Phillips’ media practice has been a rollercoaster after securing victory for Meghan Markle in her privacy battle against Associated Newspapers in late 2021.

The sensational High Court showdown has since helped the barrister secure more claimant and defendant work, including bringing Prince Harry’s fresh libel claim against Associated Newspapers and defending the BBC against libel.
