MBR&M insurance team raids Bakers

Mayer Brown Rowe & Maw (MBR&M) has beefed up its insurance and reinsurance practice with a high-level partner hire from Baker & McKenzie as the team prepares for its move into the Gherkin.

Peter Schwartz leaves Bakers after seven years with the firm. He specialises in non-marine reinsurance and liability insurance on behalf of the international insurance and reinsurance market.

Schwartz told The Lawyer: “Mayer Brown has the critical mass which is important in insurance and reinsurance. The team is very focused and gives a first-class service. I’m looking forward to working with them.”

MBR&M has been steadily growing its insurance practice in recent years. Ian McKenna joined from Holman Fenwick & Willan in 2003 and Richard Gregorian joined from Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft in 2004.

Schwartz becomes the fourteenth partner in MBR&M’s London insurance and reinsurance group, which is headed by Karen Abbott.

Schwartz joined Bakers from the now defunct London office of US firm Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal, where he was head of insurance and reinsurance. He will start at MBR&M in September.

As first reported by The Lawyer (24 July), the group is moving to the 31st floor of 30 St Mary Axe, better known as the Gherkin.
