Happy New Year! Or maybe that should be a Gallic Bonne Année, because European legal news in this first week of 2014 has focused almost exclusively on the Paris market.
No fewer than three firms have made significant lateral hires – and others are also recruiting – while the trend for boutiques continues, with a combination between teams from two separate firms.
The latest lateral has come at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, which has hired Bredin Prat corporate partner Olivier Rogivue. The appointment is significant because Rogivue is the first partner to leave Bredin Prat for several years, and also because he is joining a team led by Hervé Pisani, recruited from Darrois Villey Maillot Brochier two years ago.
Fellow magic circle firm Allen & Overy has also been hiring. It picked up an employment team led by partner Claire Toumieux from respected labour boutique Flichy Grangé.
French firms are also on the hiring carousel, with August & Debouzy turning to Weil Gotshal & Manges for private equity partner David Malamed. Malamed is going back to the domestic market after two years – he joined Weil from Gide Loyrette Nouel in 2011.
And that boutique? Well, Dethomas Kopf, founded this time last year, has merged with a team spinning off from Vigiué Schmidt Peltier Juvigny. The new firm, Dethomas Peltier Kopf Juvigny, has six partners and 10 associates and plans to grow.
Meanwhile it’s also European promotions season. All those promotions and other hires are in our regular moves round-up.
PS. If you’re an independent European firm, then keep an eye out for our annual European 100 questionnaire which should be sent out within the next fortnight. If your firm produces revenue of over €25m and you have not previously participated, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org to let us have your details.
