CC raids Sidley as US drive intensifies

Clifford Chance has underlined its commitment to the US by poaching a three-partner litigation team from US rival Sidley Austin.

In addition the magic circle firm has hired Wendy Wysong, a senior lawyer with the US Government’s Bureau of Industry & Security (BIS), as a partner in the US litigation group.

As reported in The Lawyer last month (23 July) the firm is relaunching its US practice following a major strategic review and a record set of financial results.

Sidley white collar/criminal defence lawyers Juan Morillo, Steven Cottreau and Stephen Nickelsburg have joined the firm’s Washington DC office alongside Wysong.

The firm began the process of beefing up in the US with the addition of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman partner Thomas Pax to its Washington DC office (, 23 July). The firm also sent two London lawyers, Latin America specialist adviser Ignacio Suarez Anzorena and counsel Christian Leathley, to DC and New York respectively (, 31 July).

The Sidley team are known for their work representing major corporations and professional service firms in government investigations involving securities, financial, accounting and tax fraud. Their experience also includes antitrust, immigration, and environmental law violations, and the trio have represented clients in a number of class actions and other civil litigation cases.

Wysong has 21 years of trial experience in private practice and as an assistant US attorney in the Washington DC US Attorney’s Office.
