Gerhard Schmidt, who resigned from Beiten Burkhardt last Tuesday, will take fellow corporate partners Heiner Drüke, Stephan Grauke and Uwe Hartmann with him .
Schmidt is one of the leading M&A and private equity lawyers in Germany and is also known for his tax expertise. His clients include Vodafone AirTouch and Airtours.
Joe Tortorici, managing partner of Weil Gotshal’s Central and Eastern European offices, says: “Schmidt and his team have a pan-German reputation and I’m sure they will take us into other German markets as well as into emerging markets in Central and Eastern Europe.”
He says that the firm wants to open in Munich, Düsseldorf and Berlin within the next year.
Weil Gotshal opened in Frankfurt last May. The appointments bring the number of partners in the office up to nine.
