Hunton & Williams widens UK offering

HUNTON & Williams’ London office has added a corporate recovery and insolvency practice with the hire of Clyde & Co‘s rated practice head Mark Fennessy.

It marks the start of a period of growth for the Richmond, Virginia-based firm’s UK base, which is due to move into new offices in London’s landmark ‘Gherkin’ building in early February.

London managing partner Martin Thomas said the firm was seeking to bring in tax and real-estate capabilities, while also looking at outsourcing and insurance.

“We’re creating a mini full-service office closely aligned to the core strengths of our US base,” Thomas said. “We’re a very different outfit in the UK to other US offices. Not unique, but full of people with very strong UK practices who aspire to do cross-border work.”

Fennessy, due to start at Hunton on 1 March, said he was looking forward to reuniting with former Clydes colleague Paul Tetlow, a corporate partner who joined in September.

“My brief is to establish and develop a leading practice at Hunton similar to what I did at Clyde & Co,” Fennessy said. “The basic tools are there already. It’s the perfect environment to grow a pre-eminent trans-atlantic practice.”
