KCC Legal, the ‘in-house private practice’ legal team at Kent County Council, has cracked £1m in turnover from external work – interesting reading for more than just local authority lawyers. The fact that KCC Legal, a local authority legal team touting its services to other authorities, can secure this amount of revenue with a marketing budget circa nil – and in a downturn to boot – is noteworthy in a private practice legal world that is battening down the hatches.
As public sector-focused team leaders in private practice have spent years reminding colleagues, while local government teams bring in less than City-focused teams in the good years, it is to the recession-proof public sector group that they look for shelter when booms go bad. Which makes the likes of KCC Legal head Geoff Wilde, a local government in-houser with both reputation and proven commercial acumen, a very hot recruitment prospect for private practice proper. Kent: take note.
