Macfarlanes debt finance star Tom Speechley is leaving the silver circle firm to join Dubai-based Abraaj Capital.
Speechley joined Macfarlanes in January 2004 from Norton Rose to kickstart a lender-facing leveraged buyout business. Partner Bronwen Jones arrived from Kirkland & Ellis at the same time to handle sponsor finance work.
Macfarlanes senior partner Robert Sutton said: “Tom’s made a real contribution to the transformation of our debt finance group. We’re sorry to see him go, but he leaves with our best wishes and with our debt finance group in excellent shape.”
Speechley said: “I’m sad to be leaving, but it’s an exceptional opportunity and at Abraaj I’ll be working with a market-leading private equity house that I’ve known and worked with for a number of years.”
Abraaj, which specialises in Middle East and North Africa investments, became the first pure private equity house to open in the Dubai International Financial Centre in May this year. Last year it closed the region’s biggest-ever fund, at $500m (£267.2m).
Speechley joins the private equity house in July.
