SJ Berwin takes on Lovells finance partner

Silver circle firm SJ Berwin has raided Lovells for finance rainmaker Brian Carne.

Carne is set to join the firm’s structured finance practice on 1 January next year. He will focus on all types of capital markets transactions, including securitisations and repackagings.

Carne joined Lovells in 1996 and has been an equity partner at the firm for the past three and a half years.

In May, Carne advised Paragon Finance on its £450m securitisation of loans spanning four asset classes after beating a raft of City rivals to the deal.

SJ Berwin senior partner David Harrel said Carne would contribute to the continued growth of the structured finance practice, which was a “key element” in the strategic direction of the firm’s finance practice.

Gillian Smith, head of banking at SJ Berwin, told The Lawyer: “For some time we’ve been developing a structured finance capability with a particular emphasis on alternative investments and derivatives, reflecting the firm’s market-leading position in private equity, funds formation and real estate finance.

“Brian’s arrival will allow us to offer both a wider range of expertise.”

Lovells declined to comment.
