Biggarts to merge with Steedmans

The merger, which takes the combined firm to 237 fee-earners, will result in the creation of the sixth-largest firm in Scotland.
Steedmans celebrated record profits in 2000 but has lost four partners from its Edinburgh office since the beginning of 2001. Three have already gone to Scottish firm Semple Fraser, with a fourth set to join the same firm after he has worked out his notice.
As a final blow, Steedmans managing partner Ian MacKinnon has stepped down and has decided that he will not be joining the merged firm.
Steedmans Glasgow managing partner Iain McLean would not divulge whether the five partners had left in direct response to the merger talks.
“But we feel that losing these partners has left us to realise that we’re making a better choice than those who have left,” he said.
Steedmans, which is best known for property work, is anticipating that all of its clients will move with it to Biggarts.
“We don’t see any issues with clients transferring over,” said McLean.
The firm’s property clients include McDonald’s, Marks & Spencer, Debenhams, Sainsbury’s and Glenmorangie, among other household names.
