The Italian job

Banking and finance partner Andrew Welbourn has just joined Lovells from Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy. The press announcement proudly stated that he had “developed a specialist capability in Italian financing work, particularly in the power sector, which will be beneficial to Lovells' Italian and projects practices”. Admirable indeed.
Tulkinghorn was intrigued to learn just how Welbourn's interest in the Italian market got started. As a young student he decided to learn Italian on a gap year. He went to teach English in a school in rural Italy, but when he arrived he learned that the plan was to send him to teach English to trainee nurses. What a bore.
While coaching them through their English grammar, Welbourn often joked that they might one day have to put it to use with an English patient of their own. The irony was that poor Welbourn himself became the patient after taking a tumble off his motorbike – woman driver to blame, you understand. His Italian got much better after that. Little did he know that it would help shape his future legal career.
