SPBG gives mediators a helping hand

The Solicitors Pro Bono Group (SPBG) is launching a scheme for trained mediators as part of its overarching LawWorks programme in conjunction with the Bar Pro Bono Unit.

City Disputes Panel chief executive Guy Sutton, who is involved in running the scheme, says it will give mediators invaluable experience that could help them win clients.
“Mediation is a highly competitive area, with few trained mediators able to get regular work,” said Sutton. Mediators could also use the programme to build their profiles.
The scheme will pair trained mediators with people who have a dispute that could be settled out of court but cannot get Legal Aid.
It will be piloted in London and Birmingham. Former Clifford Chance partner and mediator Tony Willis will run the scheme in London. Former Allen & Overy partner John Kendall will run the Birmingham project.
