Singapore’s WongPartnership appoints joint managing partners

One of Singapore’s largest firms, WongPartnership, has revamped its management structure by appointing Rachel Eng and Ng Wai King as joint managing partners.

The joint managing partners are part of the firm’s executive committee, which comprises seven members and is chaired by senior partner Alvin Yeo.

Eng served as sole managing partner of the firm from 1 September 2010. This is the first time the firm has introduced joint managing partner roles. It is understood that the management change reflects the firm’s intention to remain independent while developing its regional practices.

“The demands of managing a major law firm like WongPartnership, with a growing regional network and international clients, are becoming increasingly heavy. While the executive committee focuses on issues of strategy and major practice decisions, our joint managing partners will share the responsibility of driving our practices to serve the needs of our clients,” said Yeo in a statement.

According to a firm spokesperson each of the firm’s executive committee members is a full-time practising lawyer and the management responsibilities have to be shared between the members to meet the demand of managing a major law firm. All major practice groups within the firm are represented in the management team, which was also an important consideration behind the joint managing partner roles. For example, Eng is a highly regarded capital markets partner while Ng is the head of the corporate group.

“Rachel and Wai King are ideal candidates to fill this role, as they are leaders in their own areas of practice and have been handling different aspects of management over the many years they have been in the firm,” Yeo added.

WongPartnership has over 270 lawyers, including around 50 equity partners, with offices in Singapore, Abu Dhabi, Beijing, Doha and Shanghai. The firm is moving into new Singapore headquarters in the Marina Bay Financial Centre Tower 3, where Ashurst and Clifford Chance also have offices.
