Women encouraged to join judiciary

Women solicitors were encouraged to apply for judicial posts at a presentation last week by Robin Holmes, head of the judicial appointments group at Lord Chancellor's Department, and sponsored by the Association of Women Solicitors. New LCD figures show there are six women High Court judges compared with 89 men, 29 women circuit judges compared with 485 men, and 41 women recorders out of a total of 868. At the lower levels, there are 84 women deputy district judges out of a total of 726. Holmes stressed that although the Lord Chancellor was encouraging applications from women and was actively hoping for more women to be appointed, he would not indulge in positive discrimination.
