Carnelutti hires to boost critical mass

Italian firm Studio Legale Carnelutti has hired two partners and six associates from boutique firm Barozza Disertori Manzato & Fabrizi.

Paulo Barozzi and Filippo Disertori, both M&A, corporate and general commercial lawyers, join the firm as full equity partners on 1 April. They will be bringing clients with them, including some large Italian conglomerates and some from the publishing sector. Carnelutti is also in discussions with some of the firm’s Rome-based partners.

Nicoletta Portalupi, head of Carnelutti’s M&A and real estate practice, says of the move: “The thinking behind this is to keep acquiring critical mass and to increase the number of lawyers in certain key areas, such as M&A and capital markets.”

Competition from Anglo-Saxon firms has led to a string of mergers within the Italian market. But Portalupi says that the hires from Barozza are not a response to any threat. “Italian international firms are now so structured in their departments that they’re not threatened by UK firms. They’re comparable in terms of size and services,” she says.
