A UK family lawyer is to speak at an international conference next month in an attempt to shape domestic violence legislation in the emerging state of Slovenia.
Sara Blazey, a partner and head of the family law department at Sheffield firm John Howell & Co, will detail the UK legal experience of marital assaults.
Blazey will give a speech and a workshop at the Centre for Social Work Suzine conference taking place in Ljubljana on 12-13 October.
The conference was organised for Slovenian professionals such as lawyers and social workers who specialise in domestic work.
Conference organiser Dusica Grgic hopes to generate ideas which would be useful in drawing up civil and criminal laws for dealing with assaults within marriage.
She said: “You need both civil and criminal law, but you need a system which women can have confidence in.”
Blazey will describe the way the UK authorities have dealt with the problem, resulting in the Domestic Violence Bill, currently going through Parliament.
She will also outline the difficulties the law has with finding straightforward ways of dealing with offenders and victims.
Blazey was invited to speak at the conference after Grgic was introduced to her during a campaigning trip to the UK two years ago.
