An Allen & Overy (A&O) IP and commercial partner in Hamburg has set up his own boutique practice, taking three associates with him.
Henning Harte-Bavendamm will open under the name Harte-Bavendamm Rechtsanwälte and will focus on IP, IT commercial and licensing law.
Harte-Bavendamm said: “I had always thought about opening up a boutique. After 30 years in the job with the best team in Hamburg, being in a smaller unit has raised considerable interest with clients.
And there was also the allure to begin something completely new.”
It is understood that most of Harte-Bavendamm’s larger clients are likely to follow him, with names including fashion brand Levis, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, car brand Audi, logistics business TNT, hair product brand Wella (now owned by Proctor & Gamble) and Germany’s largest brewer, Krombacher.
A&O’s German IP litigation capacity has undoubtedly been weakened by Harte-Bavendamm’s departure, but A&O’s IP practice will likely revolve around Frankfurt A&O partner Wolfgang Witz, who also specialises in M&A, competition and product liability as well as IP.
