Injuries: Claimant suffered severe brain damage when an ambulance collided with his car on the A142 near Witcham, Cambridgeshire, in March 1994. Before accident claimant was fit, with good job prospects. After spending months in a vegetative state he regained consciousness. His family played a strong role in his recovery. Cambridge Health Authority admitted liability

Award: £950,000. £55,000 will be paid to parents

Buckley v Farrow & or QBD 27 January 1998

Claimant: Beverly Buckley, 34

Incident: Road traffic accident

Injuries: Claimant suffered severe head injuries when vehicle driven by defendant pulled into her line of traffic resulting in head-on collision. Defendant blamed Leicestershire County Council for failing to correct an adverse camber in the road. The plaintiff accuses the defendant of driving too fast. The defendant was convicted of driving without due care and attention, but insisted the council was partially responsible. Judge's decision will resolve who is to pay damages. Counsel for the plaintiff said although damages are to be assessed, she is claiming within the region of £1.7m

Heselwood v Collett QBD 26 January 1998

Claimant: Misha Heselwood, 21

Incident: Road traffic accident

Injuries: Claimant was knocked over while crossing a road and suffered severe head injuries in 1991. Injuries have left her confined to a wheelchair, unable to speak clearly, and in need of 24-hour care. Defendant admitted careless driving. Court told that settlement took account of risk that motorist may not have been completely responsible for accident, due to dark and wet conditions, and claimant's dark clothing
