Stephen Foster Jewellery, Hatton Garden, is suing Brian Jackson and other members of syndicate 582 at Lloyd's for £137,430 following the robbery, on 16 June, of more than £100,000-worth of jewellery. The writ says the company had taken out insurance covering its stock to a limit of £400,000 and loss of profits up to £500,000, and that the underwriters, relying on the insurance policy wording, gave 10 days notice of cancellation of the policy. It claims that, in breach of the policy, the underwriters failed to indemnify the company against the loss of jewellery and the resultant loss of profits.

Two diamond merchants are suing their insurer for damages after a thief broke into their car and stole stock worth £135,000. Benjamin Sanger and Hillel Apter, trading as SA Jewels, of Hatton Garden, London EC1, are suing Lloyd's underwriter Andrew Beazley. They claim they took out insurance with him and other underwriters against loss of their stock, limited to 135,000 for any one loss, and for business interruption cover. The writ says that in December last year Apter was travelling on business from Wigan to London, with stock in a canvas bag which was on the floor of his car behind the front seat, and covered by a coat. He called at a motorway service station but claims that while he was at the kiosk a thief broke into the car and stole his bag. The incident was caught on closed circuit television and reported to the police, but the stock has never been recovered. The writ says the insurers have refused to indemnify in respect of the loss on the basis that the car was left unattended.
