Hammond Suddards handles second deal for internet client

Hammond Suddards has completed a second acquisition for an internet sports client it took from SJ Berwin.

The firm advised on AIM- listed Sports Internet Group's purchase of offshore, tax-free bookmaker Surrey Group for £19.7m.

In May, Hammonds acted for PlanetFootball.com in Sports Internet's £26m purchase of the website provider (The Lawyer, 24 May).

Sports Internet then instructed Hammonds in its acquisition of Opta Index in June for £4m.

Hammonds claims Sports Internet changed advisers because it liked the way the firm represented PlanetFootball.com. SJ Berwin was instructed by Sports Internet at the time.

David Armitage, partner at Hammonds, says: “We impressed them on that deal and they switched to us. Since then they have given us a huge amount of work.

“We envisage a lot more work being generated by Sports Internet. Using the internet in conjunction with sports is an exciting new area, they are continually growing and IT is an expanding field.”

Lester Wilson, who worked on the latest deal, says: “Since Sports Internet, more clients in this field have contacted us, such as a professional darts organisation and the Rugby Union Wasps.”

Sports Internet expanded this year to providing websites for Premier League and First Division clubs when it bought PlanetFootball.com. Opta Index extended this and the company now provides sporting data and analysis. Among its clients are The Times and BSkyB.
